Change instruments in Veena
Change instruments in Veena from a MIDI clip’s Instrument panel, keeping its notes while choosing a different stock sound or instrument plug-in.
Veena is an AI DAW with a personal music producer built in. Describe the song you want and CoProducer builds it with you — beats, chords, melody, arrangement and mix — as real tracks you can edit, mix and export. Free, in your browser.
Change instruments in Veena, step by step
- Select a MIDI clip. Open Instrument in its dock. An audio recording instead opens Waveform; transcribe it if you want editable notes played by a MIDI instrument.
- Press the Instrument card. The picker offers the stock families Piano, Guitar, Bass + 808s, Strings, Synth, Drums and MPC.
- Choose a family and preset. Use the picker’s search when you already know the sound. A family’s presets offer a starting tone without changing the written phrase.
- Try the keyboard or pads. The instrument’s own audition controls let you hear the sound. Play the arrangement too, because its level and tone must sit with the other parts.
- For your own instrument, choose a detected VSTi in the same picker. Install or launch Veena Bridge when prompted, allow local network access, then choose the plug-in.
- Open the plug-in’s window when you want its controls. A sound or preset you choose there saves with your project.
- Ask CoProducer for a swap. "Keep these notes and put the lead on a warm synth pluck" gives it the part and the new sound in one instruction.
Stock sounds follow the track
The stock instrument belongs to the track, so MIDI clips using that track’s stock sound follow its instrument choice. A hosted VSTi is an override on its MIDI clip. Removing that override reveals the track’s stock instrument again. This distinction lets one phrase use your local plug-in while the track still has a useful built-in fallback.
Separate the sound from the phrase
An instrument swap keeps the musical notes. To change the phrase too, ask for both: "use a softer electric piano and open the chord voicings in the chorus." You can edit the notes by hand in Piano Roll, program drums in Beat Maker, or ask CoProducer for another set of options. Track processing is reached through the track’s FX button, separate from choosing the instrument.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change an instrument without rewriting its notes?
Select a MIDI clip in Veena, open Instrument and choose another sound from its instrument card. The piano roll keeps the notes, timing and velocity while the new instrument plays them. Use a built-in preset or a detected instrument plug-in through Veena Bridge, then listen with the other tracks before choosing.
Does changing an instrument replace my notes in Veena?
An instrument choice in Veena changes the sound playing the MIDI notes, so you can keep the phrase and audition another tone. Stock sounds belong to the track, while a local instrument plug-in can override an individual MIDI clip. Ask CoProducer separately for a note change when you also want a different musical phrase.
Where do instrument plug-ins open in Veena?
Choose an instrument plug-in from the Instrument picker on a MIDI clip in Veena. Veena Bridge hosts your installed plug-ins on your computer and opens their native window. Effects plug-ins use the track or master FX rack instead. The instrument’s selected sound and its saved settings stay with your project.
