Udio's Walled Garden: What It Means for Your Songs

Udio's walled garden is what Udio and Universal Music Group announced on 29 October 2025: songs made on Udio stay on Udio. Downloads were switched off that day, and Udio's CEO has since described the locks on its coming app: encryption, watermarks, fingerprints. The Udio walled garden, in Udio's own words

Sanchez did not pretend it was painless. On the day downloads went dark he wrote: "I understand this represents a significant sacrifice, and I hate eliminating functionality for our users."

What the planned app looks like

Udio's own blog has not announced the new app; its latest post is from 19 November 2025. What is known comes from a private webinar Udio co-hosted with Kobalt on 30 April 2026, as reported by Water & Music and Music Business Worldwide (25 May 2026):

• Its name is Starstruck, a mobile-first app for fans, with four modes: Cover, Reimagine, Remix and Create.
• Every song starts from someone else's. Users "will always have to select a specific artist and song", and "generic, unattributed AI music will not be available on the platform."
• You would not own what you make. The recording "would be owned by the rights holder of the participating artist."
• Nothing leaves. "Every creation on Starstruck will live exclusively inside the app's 'walled garden'", locked three ways: stream encryption, "inaudible watermarking on every output", and fingerprinting so distributors and streaming services can block matching uploads.

On 20 July 2026, Music Business Worldwide added that Udio had picked BuyDRM, in a deal announced on 14 July, to encrypt its streams.

What Udio's walled garden means for your songs

• The songs you make today can't come home. No audio, no video, no stems. You can share them only as udio.com links, which Udio's own post says anyone can open.
• They aren't yours. Udio's terms say the company "or its affiliates or their respective licensors own and will continue to own" the Output, for "personal and non-commercial purposes" only.
• They can't be released. The terms bar distributing Output on "YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Spotify, Soundcloud and similar platforms".
• The next version tightens the walls. A watermark on every output and a fingerprint registry built for streaming services to check against mean a Starstruck creation is designed to be recognised and blocked wherever it lands.
• You pay to stay inside. Udio's paid plans cost $10 (Standard) and $30 (Pro) a month, per its help centre, and the free plan allows "three 130-second songs per day", none of them downloadable.

Veena: an AI DAW with the doors open

Veena was built on the opposite deal. The song is yours from the first note, and it leaves whenever you want it to.

• Export anything, any time. The full mix or every track as stems, in 24-bit/48 kHz WAV, 320 kbps MP3 or MIDI, plus MP4 when your project has video, with no cap, on every plan. See Veena's export formats.

• No watermark, audible or inaudible. Nothing is stamped into your audio.
