How much swing does UK garage use?

A lot. UK garage pushes its 16th notes about 60–68% on the MPC scale, where 50% is straight and about 66% is a full triplet, so the hats and rimshots skip rather than tick. UK Garage Drum Pattern: The 2-Step Groove, Written Out

The classic UK garage drum pattern is the 2-step: at about 130 BPM, a kick on beat 1 and the "and" of 3 only, claps on 2 and 4, rimshots skipping between them and 16th-note hats swung hard, around 64%. Garage came out of house, and 2-step is house with kicks taken away. Remove the kicks on 2 and 4, move the one on 3 an 8th later, swing everything, and the dancefloor starts skipping instead of stomping.

The UK garage drum pattern, step by step

Count one bar as 16 steps of 16th notes, as Veena's Beat Maker does: beats 1 to 4 on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13, the "ands" on 3, 7, 11 and 15.

Kick: steps 1 and 11. Nothing on beat 3; that gap is the whole genre.
Clap: steps 5 and 13, at about 110.
Rimshots: steps 8 and 16, the "a" of 2 and the "a" of 4, at 70 to 80. Both are even steps, so the swing throws them late.
Hats: all 16 steps, loud on the offbeats (about 95) and soft elsewhere (45 to 60).

The shuffle is not optional

Play that grid straight and it sounds like a broken house loop. Swing the 16ths to around 64% and every even step, the "e" and the "a", lands late, most of the way toward a triplet. The hats start to gallop, the rimshots trip into the next clap, and the kick on step 11 feels like it's leaning back. Anywhere from about 60 to 68% is garage territory; at about 66% the 16ths sit on a full triplet.

Five 2-step variations

The double kick

In every second bar, kick on steps 1 and 3, then 11 as usual. The extra hit on the "and" of 1 knocks the bar off balance on purpose and gives the pattern a two-bar shape.

The skippy kick

Kick on steps 1, 7 and 10: beat 1, the "and" of 2 and the "e" of 3. The kick now arrives before beat 3 rather than after it, and with the swing the step 10 hit stumbles. Use it for a second verse or a switch-up.

The four-to-the-floor lift

Kick back on all four beats, claps and rims unchanged, the offbeat hat opened up. This is the 4x4 side of garage, heavier and closer to house, and it makes a hook land harder after a 2-step verse.

The open-hat turn

Every fourth bar, replace the closed hat on step 15 with an open hat at about 90, and leave step 16's rimshot to answer it. The bar breathes out, and bar 1 lands on the kick.

The dropout

Kick out for a full bar before a new section, claps, rims and hats carrying on. When the 2-step kick returns on step 1, it lands like a drop.

Why 2-step skips

House puts a kick on every beat, so the body always knows where 1 is. 2-step takes two of the four away and moves a third off the beat, so the claps on 2 and 4 become the anchor instead. The swing then pulls every in-between 16th late. Your feet follow the claps, your ear follows the hats, and the skip lives in the space between the two.

Mistakes that kill the skip

A kick on beat 3. It turns 2-step back into house.
Straight 16ths. Without the shuffle, the rims sound like mistakes.
Rims louder than the claps. The claps are the anchor; rims are decoration.
Every bar the same. Change the kick placement every second or fourth bar.
