AI Drum Generator

Updated September 2026By Veena Studio

Veena is a free AI drum generator with a drummer's ears. Describe the groove, "124 BPM house, open hats on the offbeat, clap on 2 and 4", and CoProducer writes the drum pattern as MIDI on a 16-step grid and plays it on one of seven kits, in your song. It's an AI drum machine where every hit stays editable.

Most drum generators give you a loop: an MP3 that plays the same two bars forever. A drummer gives you a part: a groove that breathes, a fill that announces the chorus, and a kick the bass player can lock to. CoProducer, your personal music producer, plays the part.

Drum patterns by genre, step by step

Veena's Beat Maker splits every 4/4 bar into 16 steps. Count them "1 e and a, 2 e and a": step 1 is the downbeat, steps 5, 9 and 13 are beats 2, 3 and 4, and steps 3, 7, 11 and 15 are the "ands" between them. Here are five grooves CoProducer writes on request, and that you can paint yourself in a minute.

GrooveTempoKitKickSnare or clapHats and cymbals
Pop and rock backbeat100–120 BPMPop or JCLive1, 9, 11Snare on 5 and 13Hihat on every odd step; Crash on step 1 of the chorus
Four on the floor, for house and techno122–130 BPMTR9091, 5, 9, 13Clap on 5 and 13Hihat Open on 3, 7, 11, 15
Half-time, for trap and hip hop140 BPMElectronic1, 11Clap on 9Hihat on every odd step, triplet rolls into beat 4
Two-step, for drum and bass170–175 BPMElectronic or Chaos1, 11Snare on 5 and 13Shuffling hats between the snares
Dembow, for reggaeton90–95 BPMElectronic or TR9091, 5, 9, 13Snare on 4, 7, 12, 15Hihat on every odd step

Ghost notes are the quiet snare hits between the backbeats. Paint them on the Snare row and pull their velocity down, or ask for "ghost notes around the snare". Swing is timing, not notes: ask CoProducer to "swing the 16ths" or "humanize the hats" and it rewrites the feel, and "tighter" quantizes it back to the grid. For house specifically, our guide to house drum programming goes deeper.

Fills, variations and a drummer's sense of the song

A pattern repeated for three minutes is a metronome with a snare. What makes drums sound played is what changes between sections, and that's all a sentence away:

  • "A one-bar fill into every chorus, snare into toms."
  • "Crash on the downbeat of each chorus, ride instead of hats in the bridge."
  • "Drop the kick for the last two bars before the drop."
  • "Same groove in verse two, with a variation every eighth bar."
  • "Stagger the intro: hats first, kick on bar 5, snare on bar 9."
  • "Half-time in the bridge, then back to full time."

CoProducer edits only the bars involved, arranges dropouts, duplicates sections with variation and staggers entries, and one undo reverses any of it. For directing the kit like a session player, meet the AI drummer.

An AI drum machine that plays with the band

Seven kits, one groove. Pop, Chaos, JCLive, Brush, Electronic, TR909 and Jazz. Swap the kit and every hit stays where it was. Load your own one-shots onto the 16-pad sampler, or play the part through your own drum plugin via the Veena Bridge.

Three takes, heard in context. Every new drum part arrives as three options, and the previews sound exactly like the clip you'll place. Picking doesn't touch your daily CoProducer allowance.

Drums the bass can lock to. CoProducer writes parts in the order the music needs: a bassline that has to follow the kick waits for the drums and reads the kick notes actually on the timeline. Record a guitar or a vocal first and CoProducer measures your take's tempo and downbeat, then writes the drums to you.

Drum-led genres are among the strongest: in Veena's own data, 91.7% of first requests for techno and 90.7% for EDM get a first result on day one. Want the 808 and the melody too? Hand the same sentence to the AI beat maker, or program everything by hand in the free online beat maker.

LANDR Layers hands you audio, not hits. It's a standalone program you install, with 8 GB of RAM as the minimum, it generates drum stems as audio for you to drag into another DAW, and a LANDR Studio plan includes 25 minutes of generation a month (LANDR's AI drummer page, September 2026). There's more in our LANDR alternative guide.

Artificial Studio takes a number, not a groove. You choose a seed, press Run and download an MP3 loop, and its own FAQ says "There's no need for prompts" (Artificial Studio's drum generator page, September 2026). You can't move one kick inside an MP3.

ChordChord's drum machine is a doorway to a subscription. Press "AI Drums" and it fills a grid of kick, snare and hats; to keep shaping it you open ChordChord, whose Pro plan is $27 a month after a $9.99 first month (ChordChord's drum machine and pricing pages, September 2026).

Logic Pro's Session Players need Apple hardware and a licence. Apple's drummers "take your direction on the fly", on an Apple silicon Mac for $199.99, or for $12.99 a month in the Creator Studio bundle (Apple's Logic Pro page, September 2026).

Veena is the AI drum generator that plays in your browser, writes to your song and gives you every hit to keep. If you're weighing more options, our roundup of the best AI drum generators ranks twelve.

Try this in Veena

Write drums for a 174 BPM drum and bass track: a two-step pattern on the Electronic kit, kick on 1 and the and of 3, snares on 2 and 4 with ghost notes around them, shuffling hi-hats, a snare roll into bar 16 and a crash on the drop. Give me three takes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Veena's AI drum generator free?

Yes. Veena is an AI DAW with a personal music producer built in. Describe the song you want and CoProducer builds it with you — beats, chords, melody, arrangement and mix — as real tracks you can edit, mix and export. Free, in your browser. Drum parts, all 7 kits and every export are free; CoProducer runs on a daily allowance, and Veena Pro, at $20 a month, removes that cap.

What's the difference between an AI drum generator and an AI drum machine?

An AI drum generator writes the pattern; a drum machine is the instrument you play it on. Veena is both. CoProducer generates the groove from your description, and Veena's Beat Maker, a 16-step-per-bar grid with 7 kits and a 16-pad sampler beside it, is the drum machine where you change every hit, velocity and sound yourself.

Can the AI drum generator write fills and variations?

Yes. Ask Veena's CoProducer for "a one-bar fill into every chorus", "a crash on the downbeat", "drop the kick for two bars before the drop" or "the same groove with a variation every eighth bar". It edits only the bars involved, arranges dropouts and duplicates sections with variation, and one undo reverses any change you don't like.

Can I use my own drum samples or drum plugin?

Yes. Load your own one-shots onto Veena's 16-pad sampler, or connect your drum plugins through the Veena Bridge on a Mac or Windows computer. CoProducer knows instruments like Superior Drummer by name and starts from their real presets. The pattern stays MIDI, so you can swap kits or plugins without losing the groove.

Can I export the drums as MIDI or audio?

Yes. Choose Download MIDI file on the drum clip to take the pattern into FL Studio, Ableton Live or Logic Pro, or export every MIDI track in the project as one .mid. For audio, Veena exports 24-bit WAV, 320 kbps MP3 or every track as stems in a zip, with no cap and no watermark.

Will the drums fit my bassline or my own recording?

Yes. Veena's CoProducer writes parts in the order the music needs, so when a bassline has to lock to the kick, it reads the drum notes actually placed. Build around your own recording and Veena measures its tempo and downbeat, sets the project tempo to match and writes the drums to your take, so the kit follows you.
