Lofi Piano Melody

A lofi piano melody is a handful of soft notes, usually from the pentatonic scale, played in the gaps of jazzy seventh chords and a little behind the beat. Here are four ideas in F major at 78 BPM, written out note by note. Five notes to choose from, F, G, A, C and D, with no half steps between them, so almost any of them sits sweetly over these chords. The one to keep off the C13 is F, which rubs against the chord's E. The melody only speaks on beats 3 and 4 of bars 1 and 3, then answers with long notes in bars 2 and 4. Half of every bar is silence, which is what keeps lofi in the background where it belongs.

2. Octaves and a grace note · Upright Piano

For the second time through bars 3 and 4, double the melody in octaves and crush a grace note into it:

• Bar 3, just before beat 1: G#4 and G#5 as a 32nd note, sliding into A4 and A5 on the beat.
• Beat 2: C5 and C6. The "and" of 2: D5 and D6.
• Beat 3: F5 and F6, held for two beats.
• Bar 4: E5 and E6 on beat 1, then D5 and D6 held to the end.

The grace note is a half step below its target, the way a pianist lands on a note by rolling off its neighbour. Upright Piano is brighter and harder-struck than the grand, so octaves stay clear over busy drums.

3. The blue-note turnaround · Acoustic Grand Piano

On beat 4 of bar 2, play four 16ths: Bb4, A4, Ab4, G4, then land on F4 on the first beat of bar 3. It slides from the seventh of C13 down to the root of Fmaj7, through Ab, the blue note that is not in the key at all. It fits straight into the empty half of bar 2 in idea 1.

4. The lazy triplet · Electric Piano

Beat 3 of each bar splits into three 8th-note triplets, a climb in bar 1 and a fall in bar 2, then settles on a quarter note. Triplets pull against a straight or swung drum grid, and that slight drag is the sleepy, half-drunk feel lofi is known for. Set the piano roll's snap to 1/3 Beat to draw them.

Timing and touch: where lofi lives

Behind the beat. Set snap to None and drag each melody note a hair late. Or ask CoProducer to "humanize the timing" and it does the whole clip.

Uneven velocity. Keep most notes soft and let the first note of each phrase land a little harder. In the velocity editor, a flat row of identical bars is the sound of a machine.

Let notes ring. Stretch a note until it overlaps the next and the piano rings through the change like a held sustain pedal. Veena's pianos are sampled, so the ring decays naturally.
