What BPM is lofi hip hop?

Most lofi hip hop sits between 70 and 90 BPM, with study-beat tracks clustering around 75–85. Slower feels sleepier; past about 90 it turns into boom bap. A lofi drum pattern is a slow, soft boom bap groove at 70–90 BPM: a kick on beat 1 and the "and" of 3, a gentle snare on 2 and 4 that sits behind the beat, ghost notes, and hats swung so hard they almost stumble. Everything is quieter than in boom bap. The grids count one bar as 16 steps, the same grid as Veena's Beat Maker: beats 1 to 4 on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13, the "ands" on 3, 7, 11 and 15.

Kick on steps 1 and 11. Snare on 5 and 13, a touch late. A ghost snare on step 16 that pulls the loop back to the top. Hats on the 8ths, swung at 8th-note resolution so the "ands" drag, 60 on the beats and 40 in between. At 80 BPM that's 750 milliseconds a beat: room for every hit to breathe.

Five more lofi grooves

The wandering kick. Kick on steps 1, 7 and 10. The kick on the "e" of 3 falls late under 16th swing, and the bar sounds like a drummer half asleep in the best way.
Rim and ride. Swap the snare for a side stick on 5 and 13, and the hats for a ride on the 8ths. On the Jazz kit it's a late-night trio in a small room.
Brushes. Slow to 72 BPM on the Brush kit, snare on 2 and 4 at about 70, hats on the beats only. The softest groove here, made for rain-on-the-window tracks.
The triplet shuffle. Hats on 8th-note triplets, three to a beat, so the whole bar swings like jazz. Kick and snare stay where they were. Triplets fall between the 16th steps, so ask CoProducer to write them.
The breath. Every 8 bars, drop the kick and snare for the last two beats and let the hats and chords float. The loop comes back feeling fresh without a single new part.

Why lazy works

Lofi borrows boom bap's bones and takes the edge off every one of them. The swing pushes the offbeats late, the snare leans behind the beat, and the velocities never repeat exactly, so the loop sounds played by hand and then recorded to worn tape. Nothing is loud enough to demand attention, which is exactly the point of music people study, work and sleep to.

The ghost notes matter more here than anywhere. At velocity 30 they sit under the hats, and you only notice them when they're gone.

Make it in Veena

Lofi drum mistakes

The kick at velocity 127. Hats dead straight. A snare with a long, bright reverb that fills every gap. Drums louder than the chords. And sixteen identical bars in a row: change one small thing every eight.
