What is a stem in music?
In music, a stem is one audio file holding a group of a song's parts — all the drums, or all the vocals — that lines up with the song's other stems. Veena handles stems both ways, free in your browser: it exports your song as stems and splits your own mixes into them, which is what makes a finished track workable again.

Every stem starts at the same point and runs the full length of the song. Drop a set into any DAW at bar 1 and the track plays back exactly as mixed.
What is a stem in music used for?
- Handing off a mix or master, when an engineer wants drums, bass, music and vocals separately.
- Remixing your own songs, carrying the vocal stem into a new production.
- Live shows, playing backing stems under a band.
- Instrumental and sync versions, made by muting the vocal stem.
Example: four stems from a pop song
A three-minute, 100 BPM pop song in G major might go out as four stems: drums (kick, snare, claps, hats), bass (synth bass), music (piano, guitar, strings) and vocals (lead and harmonies). Four WAV files, each exactly three minutes long, each starting at zero.
