What is the UK drill drum pattern?

UK drill sits around 138–145 BPM, with 140–142 the sweet spot; New York drill runs about the same or a little faster. Both feel half as fast because the snare lands once a bar. How is a drill drum pattern different from trap?

Both are half-time with the snare on beat 3. Drill groups its hats 3+3+2 instead of running straight 8ths, moves the snare to beat 4 every second bar, and slides its 808s far more. In Veena, CoProducer has separate trap and drill guidance, and the 808 Glide preset is built for drill: mono, sliding between notes you overlap.

Drill Drum Pattern: 3+3+2 Hats and the Moving Snare

A drill drum pattern is a half-time groove at 138–145 BPM: hi-hats grouped 3+3+2, a snare on beat 3 that moves to beat 4 every second bar, and sparse kicks that leave room for a sliding 808. The grid stays straight. Drill's skip comes from where the hits land, not from swing.

The drill drum pattern, two bars

Every bar is 16 steps of 16th notes, the grid Veena's Beat Maker uses: beats 1 to 4 on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13, the "ands" on 3, 7, 11 and 15. Drill is a two-bar pattern, so here are both:

Hats: steps 1, 4 and 7, then 9, 12 and 15 in both bars: 3 steps, 3 steps, 2 steps, twice. Velocity 90 to 100, plus a quiet extra hat on step 16 of bar 1, at about 50, that disappears in bar 2.
Snare: step 9 in bar 1, step 13 in bar 2. Velocity 120 to 127.
Kick: steps 1 and 15 in bar 1; steps 1, 4, 7 and 15 in bar 2, the last of each bar a little softer, around 95.

Loop the two bars at 142 BPM. The snare on beat 3 sets up the half-time feel, and the moment it slips to beat 4 in bar 2, the phrase lurches. That lurch is drill.

Four variations

The pickup snare. In bar 2, add a softer snare on step 16 at 40 to 50. It stumbles straight into the next bar's kick and fills the gap the moved snare leaves.

The answering kick. Kicks on steps 1, 7 and 13 in bar 1, then on steps 3 and 9 in bar 2. With the bar 2 snare gone from beat 3, the kick takes that spot, and the two bars answer each other like call and response.

The triplet roll. Every fourth bar, replace the hats on beat 4, steps 13 to 16, with six 16th-note triplets climbing from 55 to 100. Drill mixes straight 16ths with triplet bursts, and one roll per four bars is plenty.

The gap. Take the hats out of beat 3 in bar 2, steps 9 to 12, and leave only the 808 ringing. Removing hits is the most drill thing you can do to a loop.

Why drill feels tense

Three things pull against each other. The hats run a 3+3+2 that meets the beat only on 1 and 3, so the top of the groove skips. The snare sits where trap would put it, then moves, so you can't settle into the half-time. And after beat 1, the kicks avoid the beats, landing on the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2 and the "and" of 4, so the 808 carries the weight. Every part keeps you slightly off balance, which is the mood drill is built on: cold, sparse and restless.

Program the lurch in Veena

Ask for it. Paste the prompt at the bottom of this page into CoProducer. Drill has its own dedicated guidance, separate from trap, and CoProducer offers three takes: hover each card to hear it and press Enter on the one that lurches.
Swap the kit. New CoProducer drums land on the Pop kit. Say "swap the drums to the Electronic kit" for tight synthetic hats and snares, or "the TR909 kit" for something harder. The preset menu on the left of the Beat Maker does the same.
Place the hats. Double-click the clip to open the Beat Maker, which shows 16 steps to the bar. Click steps 1, 4, 7, 9, 12 and 15 on the Hihat row, then hover each hit and drag its velocity to taste.
Get the rolls. Say "a 16th-note triplet roll across beat 4 of bar 4" and CoProducer writes the six hits between the grid's steps. Or load your own hat onto Veena's 16-pad sampler and draw the triplets with the snap on 1/6 Beat.
Slide the 808. "Add an 808 Glide that slides between the kicks" gives you Veena's drill 808: mono, sliding between notes you overlap, written against the drums you picked. The slides are written out on the 808 bassline page.

Common drill drum mistakes

Straight 8th-note hats. That's trap. Group them 3+3+2.
The snare on beat 3 in every bar. Move it to beat 4 every second bar, or add the pickup.
A kick on every downbeat. Leave space for the 808 to carry them.
Rolls everywhere. One per four bars, at the end of the phrase.
