What is a string ostinato?

A string ostinato is a short figure, usually one bar of 8ths or 16ths, that the strings repeat over and over while the harmony, the melody or the orchestration changes around it. String Ostinato: 4 Cinematic Patterns, Written Note by Note

A string ostinato is a short figure the strings repeat bar after bar, usually 8ths or 16ths, while the chords move around it. It turns a static cue into momentum. Here are four patterns in C minor at 120 BPM, written note by note. Patterns 1, 2 and 4 run over Cm, Ab, Eb and Bb, one chord per bar, i–VI–III–VII: the epic minor loop. Pattern 3 is a build with chords of its own. Veena's sampled strings play at the pitch you draw, so C3 is the C an octave below middle C.

Sixteen Cs a bar, accented 3-3-2 twice, and it never leaves C, even when the chords do. Over Cm and Ab the C belongs to the chord; over Eb and Bb it becomes a sixth and a ninth, and the tension climbs until the loop comes home. That's a pedal point, the oldest suspense device in scoring.

Each chord up and down in 16ths, voiced so that only one or two notes change from bar to bar: G rises to Ab, then C and Ab fall to Bb and G, then Eb and G step down to D and F. The ear hears one figure moving, not four separate arpeggios.

Not an ostinato but its partner: whole-note chords in the same voicings as pattern 2, and a low C pedal under everything. The top voice sighs G, Ab, G, F. String Ensemble has the slowest swell of Veena's strings, so it belongs on long notes, and Contrabass lives between F1 and D3, dark and slow to speak.

Why an ostinato drives a cue

Repetition reads as motion. A figure that never stops feels like something is happening, even when the harmony stands still.

Fixed against moving. Keep the figure and move the chords, as in pattern 2, or keep the note and move the chords, as in pattern 1. Either way, one layer holds while another travels, and that friction is the drama.

Three layers, three speeds. A low pulse in 16ths, a middle figure in 16ths an octave up, a held line in whole notes. Each owns its register and its rhythm.

Dynamics do the building. The notes can stay identical for 16 bars while the velocity climbs from soft to loud.

Double-click the ostinato clip. With snap on 1/4 Beat, every 16th is one click.
