Amapiano Log Drum

The amapiano log drum is a pitched, percussive bass: each hit drops onto its note, the line skips around a soft four-on-the-floor kick in syncopated 16ths, and overlapping notes slide into each other. It runs at about 110–116 BPM. In Veena, a free AI DAW with a personal music producer built in, CoProducer plays it on Log Drum Bass, a preset built for exactly this sound.

What the log drum does

It's a kick, a bass and a melody at once. The thump at the start of every hit makes it percussion. The note it lands on makes it the bassline, so it must be tuned to the chords: roots, fifths, sevenths and octave jumps. And because notes can slide into each other, a two-bar pattern turns into a hook people hum.

Veena's Log Drum Bass preset is built around that gesture. Every hit starts a fourth above the note you write and drops onto it in about 35 milliseconds, and a note that overlaps the next one glides into it in about 45 milliseconds. Turn the MOVEMENT knob and both the drop and the slide get longer.

The drums under it

Count one bar as 16 steps of 16th notes, as Veena's Beat Maker does: beats 1 to 4 on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13, the "ands" on 3, 7, 11 and 15. At 112 BPM:

• Kick: steps 1, 5, 9 and 13, soft and round, velocity about 90.
• Shaker: all 16 steps, loud on the offbeats and soft between.
• Open hat: steps 3, 7, 11 and 15.
• Side stick: steps 5, 8, 11 and 13, the clave-style figure congas often play.

Keep the kick quiet. The log drum owns the low end, and a hard kick fights it for every beat.

Five amapiano log drum patterns

All in A minor over an Am9 vamp. Letters are notes on the 16 steps, one line per bar:

1. Call and answer. Bar 1 states the root on step 1, leaves a long gap, then answers on step 12 (A) and step 15 (E). Bar 2 replies off the beat: A on step 3, G on 8, A on 11, E on 14. Lengthen that last E until it overlaps the next bar's A and it slides down into the downbeat.

2. The offbeat roller. A on steps 3, 7, 11 and 15, between every kick. In bar 2, make the last one the A an octave up and hold it into the next bar's first hit, so it slides back down. The log drum and kick never collide, so both hit full weight.

3. The double. Pairs of 16ths on steps 3 and 4, then 11 and 12: the root, then the same note an octave higher. Each pair bounces like a ball, and the gap after it is as important as the hits.

4. The slide up. In bar 2, put E on step 13 and stretch it to overlap an A on step 15. With Log Drum Bass, the pitch glides up a fourth into the phrase ending. Save it for the last bar of every four, where it tells the dancefloor a change is coming.

5. Space. Two hits a bar: step 4, the "a" of 1, and step 11, the "and" of 3. Under a vocal or a busy piano, less log drum is more.

Velocity: 100 to 115 on the main hits, 80 to 90 on the in-between notes. A line at one flat level sounds programmed; a line that leans on its first hit sounds played.

Why it grooves

The kick marks every beat, so the log drum doesn't have to. That frees it to land on the 16ths between beats, where it pulls against the straight shaker and makes the body move. The silence between hits does as much as the hits, because each note lands heavier after a gap. And the two-bar call and answer gives a loop that repeats for six minutes something to say.

1. Ask for the groove. Paste the prompt at the bottom of this page into CoProducer and name the preset, Log Drum Bass. 2. Shape the line. Double-click the log drum clip to open the piano roll. Set the snap to 1/4 Beat for 16ths, drag a note's end past the start of the next to make it slide, and use the velocity editor to lean on the first hit of each phrase.

Log drum mistakes

• Out of key. The log drum is the bassline. Every note has to fit the chord.
• A hit on every 16th. Leave gaps; the groove lives in them.
• A loud, punchy kick. Soften it, or the low end turns to mud.
• No slides. Overlap one pair of notes per phrase and the line starts to sing.
