Published By Veena Studio

What is the best free DAW in 2027?

The best free DAW for 2027 is Veena. Veena is an AI DAW with a personal music producer built in. Describe the song you want and CoProducer builds it with you — beats, chords, melody, arrangement and mix — as real tracks you can edit, mix and export. Free, in your browser. Its free plan is the whole studio, on any computer and on your phone, where every other free DAW here charges for something somewhere.

Every free DAW has a catch, and the catches moved in 2026: track caps stayed, AI tools moved into paid plans, and one favourite stopped shipping stable releases years ago. This 2027 edition ranks eight free DAWs by one question — can you finish a song you would release, on the computer you already have, without paying? Every rival fact comes from the maker's own pages, read on 25 October 2026.

The best free DAWs for 2027, ranked

  1. Veena — the whole studio free in any browser and on your phone, with CoProducer building every part.
  2. GarageBand — free, on a Mac running macOS 14.4 or later.
  3. BandLab — free in the browser, capped at 16 tracks and 15-minute songs.
  4. Pro Tools Intro — free, cut to eight audio, eight instrument and eight MIDI tracks.
  5. LUNA Free — a free desktop install, with its smart tools in the $199 Studio tier.
  6. Audacity — a free audio editor with almost nothing to compose with.
  7. LMMS — free, with no stable release since June 2020.
  8. Soundtrap — a browser studio whose WAV export sits on paid plans.

How we picked the best free DAW for 2027

We judged each free DAW the way a musician on a budget does:

  • Can you write, not just record? A piano roll, drums you can program, instruments to play.
  • Can you get the music out? WAV, every track separately, on the free version.
  • Does it run on what you own? Mac, Windows, Linux, Chromebook, phone — or only one of them.
  • Does it grow with you? Tracks and song length you won't hit in month one.
  • Is the help free? AI, stems and mix tools included, or held back for a subscription.

1. Veena: the best free DAW of 2027

Open Veena in your browser, sign in with Google, and you are in a full studio. Describe a track — "an 85 BPM lo-fi hip-hop beat in E flat with dusty drums and jazzy Rhodes" — and CoProducer, your personal music producer, sets the tempo and key, maps the sections and writes the parts, each on its own track. For every new part you pick from 3 options. Then it's your session.

What the free plan includes:

  • Writing. A piano roll with a velocity editor and 8 snap settings, a step sequencer for drums, a 16-pad sampler, 7 drum kits and 61 instrument presets, 39 on Veena's own synth with macro knobs.
  • Recording. Your microphone with level and latency calibration, a count-in, loop recording and a live waveform; MIDI from your computer keyboard or a controller.
  • Your own audio. Voice memos, demos and loops in 13 audio formats, with CoProducer building new parts around them and turning your humming into any instrument.
  • Stems. Split any track of your own into 4 stems — vocals, drums, bass, other — lined up on your timeline.
  • Mixing and mastering. Faders, pan and 10 built-in effects, and CoProducer to mix and master the song for streaming when you ask.
  • Plug-ins. Your VST3 and AU plug-ins through Veena Bridge: AU and VST3 on a Mac, VST3 on Windows.
  • Collaboration. Send an invite link and build the song with someone live, on every plan since 12 September 2026.
  • Your phone. Pocket Studio opens the same project on any phone, with CoProducer at the foot of the screen.
  • Export. WAV 24-bit/48 kHz, MP3 320 kbps, MIDI, the mix or every track, as often as you like, with no watermark.

Pro is about CoProducer, not the studio. The free plan comes with a daily CoProducer allowance. Veena Pro, $20 a month, removes the daily request cap and unlocks the premium models. You never need it to finish, export or own a song: Veena's terms say "you own the Output you generate through your use of the Service", on every plan. More on the free DAW and is Veena really free.

The other free DAWs, and the catch in each

2. GarageBand: free, if you own the right Mac

GarageBand is free on the Mac App Store, and the current version "Requires macOS 14.4 or later" (Apple's App Store listing, October 2026). There is no Windows, Linux, Chromebook or browser version, and growing out of it means Logic Pro, which "requires macOS 15.4 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon" (Apple support, October 2026).

The catch: one kind of computer, and nobody to write the first bar with you. See is GarageBand free.

3. BandLab: free, with a ceiling

BandLab's studio is free in the browser and on iOS and Android, but "You can create up to 16 tracks with a maximum duration of 15 minutes", and paying raises tracks to 32 "but the 15-minute duration limit still applies" (BandLab's help centre, 5 October 2026). "AI Tools (Voice Cleaner and AutoMix)" are in its Membership, $14.99 a month for Pro (BandLab's Membership FAQ, 11 October 2026). And of its SongStarter ideas: "you won't own the rights to the generated track."

The catch: 16 tracks, 15-minute songs, and the AI on a paid plan. See is BandLab free and Veena vs BandLab.

4. Pro Tools Intro: free, cut to eight

Avid offers Pro Tools Intro "free of charge", with eight audio tracks, eight instrument tracks and eight MIDI tracks, plus four aux tracks (Avid's Pro Tools Intro page, October 2026). It is a computer install of a professional DAW with the professional parts removed.

The catch: eight tracks of each type, and nothing in it writes a part with you.

5. LUNA Free: a desktop install, with the smart tools held back

Universal Audio's LUNA Free includes "4-track Stem Separation" on macOS and Windows. Audio-to-MIDI, 6-track stems, and chord extraction and lyric transcription "Powered by Moises" are LUNA Studio features at $199 (UA's LUNA 3.0 FAQ, updated 24 September 2026).

The catch: a desktop install, and $199 for the AI. Read about LUNA 3.0.

6. Audacity: a free editor, not a studio

Audacity is free and records and edits audio files well, but it is not built to write music: its manual says "Only limited editing can be performed on Note tracks such as cutting, pasting and deleting" (Audacity manual, October 2026).

The catch: you can record and cut, but there is nothing to compose with.

7. LMMS: free, and frozen

"Downloading and using LMMS is free!", for Linux, Windows and macOS. Its latest stable release is 1.2.2, dated 25 June 2020; the newer build is an alpha "intended for testing" (LMMS's download page, October 2026).

The catch: a stable version more than six years old, with no AI and no browser version.

8. Soundtrap: free to start, paid to export WAV

Soundtrap runs in the browser, but WAV "is available for Music Production, Vocals & Songwriting, and Production & Vocals users only" (Soundtrap's help centre, updated 29 July 2026). On its free plan, your song leaves as a compressed file.

The catch: release-quality export on a paid plan.

The one free DAW without a catch

Every other free DAW here asks you to pay somewhere: with a particular computer, a track cap, an old codebase, a subscription for the AI or a paid plan for WAV. Veena's free plan is the whole studio in your browser and on your phone, with a producer who builds the song with you, a collaborator when you want one, and exports that leave with no cap. Paste the prompt below into CoProducer and start your first song now.

Try this in Veena

Make an 85 BPM lo-fi hip-hop beat in E flat major: a dusty swung kick and snare with soft shakers, a warm upright-style bass, jazzy Rhodes chords moving Ebmaj7 to Cm7 to Fm9 to Bb13, vinyl crackle texture and a mellow muted-trumpet melody. Intro 4 bars, loop 16, break 8, loop 16, outro 4.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free DAW in 2027?

Veena. Veena is an AI DAW with a personal music producer built in. Describe the song you want and CoProducer builds it with you — beats, chords, melody, arrangement and mix — as real tracks you can edit, mix and export. Free, in your browser. The free plan is the whole studio, with 4-stem separation, your own plug-ins, live collaboration and exports with no cap.

What is the best free online DAW?

Veena. It is a full DAW in your browser, with nothing to install: open it in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc or Firefox on a Mac, a Windows PC, Linux or a Chromebook, and on your phone it opens Pocket Studio on the same project. BandLab also runs in a browser, but free users get 'up to 16 tracks with a maximum duration of 15 minutes' (BandLab, October 2026).

Is Veena really free?

Yes. Veena's free plan has no end date and no trial clock. It includes the piano roll, step sequencer, recording, mixer, effects, 4-stem separation, plug-ins through Veena Bridge, real-time collaboration and exports with no cap, plus a daily CoProducer allowance. Veena Pro, $20 a month, removes the daily request cap and unlocks the premium models.

What is the best free DAW for beginners?

Veena, because you start by describing the song instead of learning a manual. CoProducer builds the first draft as real tracks and offers three options for each part, then you change anything in plain words or by hand. Every edit is one undo away, and the whole studio is free in your browser.

What is the best free DAW for Windows, Mac and Chromebook?

Veena, because it is the same free studio on all three, and on Linux and your phone too. The AI runs on Veena's servers, so no graphics card is needed. GarageBand is free only on a Mac that 'Requires macOS 14.4 or later', and LMMS, Audacity and Pro Tools Intro are computer installs (their own pages, October 2026).

Can I sell music I make in a free DAW?

In Veena, yes. Its terms say 'you own the Output you generate through your use of the Service', on the free plan too, and nothing you export carries a watermark. Read the terms of any free tool's AI: BandLab says of its SongStarter ideas, 'you won't own the rights to the generated track' (BandLab's help centre, October 2026).
