Is GarageBand Free? Yes, With One Catch: Apple Hardware

GarageBand is free, so the real answer to "is GarageBand free" depends on your computer: Apple gives it away only on the Mac, iPhone and iPad, and the current versions need macOS 15.6 or iOS 26. For everyone else, and for anyone who wants a producer in the room, the best free alternative is Veena: a personal music producer inside an AI DAW, free in any browser, with your own plug-ins through Veena Bridge and no cap on exporting the mix or every track.

Here is exactly what Apple gives away, what it keeps for Logic Pro, and what a free studio looks like on the computer you already have. Apple facts come from its App Store listings and product pages as they read in September 2026.

Is GarageBand free? Yes, on Apple devices

Apple charges nothing for GarageBand, on either of its versions:

• GarageBand for Mac: "Free" on the Mac App Store, a 731.9 MB download. The current version "Requires macOS 15.6 or later", though Apple's GarageBand page still says "macOS Monterey or later required": older Macs can get an older build.
• GarageBand for iPhone and iPad: "Free" on the App Store, 1.9 GB, and the current version "Requires iOS 26.0 or later." Its extra sounds are a "free download from GarageBand Sound Library."

Apple calls the Mac version "a fully equipped music creation studio right inside your Mac", with instruments, guitar and voice presets, and "an incredible selection of session drummers and percussionists". For a free app on a device you already own, that is generous.

What "free" leaves out

The price is zero. The catches are elsewhere.

It only runs on Apple hardware. There is no GarageBand for Windows, Android, Chromebook, Linux or the web. If your laptop is a PC or a Chromebook, "free" doesn't reach you, and our GarageBand for Windows guide covers what to do instead.

Recent versions want recent devices. The current Mac build needs macOS 15.6, and the iPhone and iPad build needs iOS 26.

The iPhone and iPad version limits recording. Apple's own page says: "Multitrack recording requires a compatible third‑party audio interface."

Apple's newest tools are in Logic, not GarageBand. Session Players, Stem Splitter and Mastering Assistant are marketed for Logic Pro. Logic costs $199.99, or comes inside Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 a month or $129 a year, and "Logic Pro for Mac requires macOS 15.6 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon" (Apple's Logic Pro page and Apple Support, September 2026).

What it costs you: an Apple device first, a new one if you want the current version, and $199.99 or $12.99 a month the day you outgrow it.

Is GarageBand free on Windows, Android or Chromebook?

No, because it doesn't exist there. Apple has never released GarageBand outside its own platforms, so anything offered as "GarageBand for PC" or "GarageBand APK" isn't Apple's. On those machines, a browser studio is the free answer, and Veena is the one with a producer built in.

The free alternative on any computer: Veena

What GarageBand users recognise, and what they gain:

• Instruments and drums. 61 instrument presets, 7 drum kits and a 16-pad sampler, played from your computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard.
• A drummer, and the whole band. Where GarageBand has its session drummers, CoProducer writes the drums, bass, chords and melody, and changes them when you ask: "make the chorus drums bigger", "swap the piano for a Rhodes".
• Your voice and your guitar. Record from your mic with a count-in and a live waveform. Hum a tune and voice to instrument turns it into strings or a synth.
• Stems from any song file. Right-click and choose Separate into Stems: vocals, drums, bass and other, on every plan.
• Sounds on request. Ask for "a dusty vinyl snare" or "a warm analog pad" and CoProducer searches 27,356 curated samples plus a licensed professional catalogue, then shows you 10 preview cards to audition.
• A mix that sounds finished. Say "warmer, with the vocal up front" and CoProducer sets levels and pan and tunes Veena's 10 built-in effects, from the 8-band EQ and compressor to reverb, delay and Auto-Tune, then masters the song for streaming.
• Friends in the session. Click Share, send an invite link, and build the song together in real time, each with a named cursor.

When it's finished, export WAV 24-bit/48 kHz, MP3 320 kbps or MIDI, the whole song or every track, as often as you like, with no watermark. Veena's terms say "you own the Output you generate through your use of the Service."

Veena is free with a daily CoProducer allowance. Veena Pro is $20 a month and removes the daily request cap and unlocks the premium models. There is no hardware to buy first.

Other free options, and their price

BandLab. Free in the browser and on phones, but "You can create up to 16 tracks with a maximum duration of 15 minutes" (BandLab help centre, edited 24 March 2026), and its AI tools need Pro at $14.99 a month. Read our BandLab alternatives guide.

Soundtrap. Free online, but "WAV downloads (or high quality downloads) are only available on Music Production, Production & Vocals, and Vocals & songwriting", and some loops and instruments are "locked unless you're on a paid subscription plan" (Soundtrap help centre, September 2026).

Audiotool. "100% free" in the browser, but no built-in AI appears on its product pages, and "Safari and other niche browsers are currently out of scope" (Audiotool's site, September 2026).

Moving from GarageBand to Veena
