ACE-Step or ACE Studio?
Two different products share the name. ACE-Step is an open-source music generation model, now at version 1.5, that you download and run yourself. ACE Studio is a paid app you install on Mac or Windows, sold yearly or as a one-off licence, that turns MIDI and lyrics into vocals and instruments. This page is about the model. What ACE-Step asks of you
Everything below is from ACE-Step's own GitHub README and project page, read on 23 September 2026.
An install you maintain. "Requirements: Python 3.11-3.12, CUDA GPU recommended (also supports MPS / ROCm / Intel XPU / CPU)." You install a package manager, clone the repository, sync dependencies and launch; models "auto-download on first run", and then you "Open http://localhost:7860" to reach a Gradio web page. Portable packages for Windows and macOS skip some steps, not the machine.
Quality that depends on your graphics card. ACE-Step 1.5 is light: the project page says it "runs locally with less than 4GB of VRAM". But the README's own model table sets what you get by card. At 6 GB or less, the language model that plans the song is "disabled by default", with "INT8 quantization + full CPU offload". "Best quality" is the 24 GB row. The XL models, released 2 April 2026, need "≥12GB VRAM (with offload), ≥20GB recommended".
A slot machine for results. Under "Limitations & Future Improvements", its authors list "Output Inconsistency: Highly sensitive to random seeds and input duration, leading to varied "gacha-style" results", "Limited style adherence and musicality ceiling", "Coarse vocal synthesis lacking nuance" and "Needs finer-grained musical parameter control". When the song misses, you roll again.
Edits that leave seams. Changing part of a song means repainting a region of audio, and the same list warns of "Unnatural transitions in repainting/extend operations". There is no piano roll: what comes out is audio, not notes.
A DAW sold separately. To arrange, mix and record around it, ACE-Step offers a "Standalone VST3 plugin (C++/GGML) for DAW integration". That means you still need a DAW to host it, and a computer that can run both.
The README also points to a hosted site, acemusic.ai, "100% free, no GPU required!". It spares you the install, not the model: the same seeds, the same repainting, and still no studio around the result.

Edit notes, not regions. Drums, bass, chords and melody land as MIDI parts on their own tracks, so a wrong note is a click in the piano roll, not a repaint. Ask in plain words, "half-time drums in the breakdown", "swap the supersaw for a softer pad", "extend the second drop to 32 bars", and one undo reverses any CoProducer change.
A studio around the song, free. 61 instrument presets (39 on Veena's own synth, including six 808s), 7 drum kits, a 16-pad sampler, 10 built-in effects, a mixer, recording from your mic, and a sample search across 27,356 curated samples plus a licensed professional catalogue. On Mac and Windows your own plugins (VST3, plus AU on Mac) load through the Veena Bridge helper app.
No graphics card, no install. The AI runs on Veena's servers; the studio runs in Chrome and other modern browsers on Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebook laptops. Sign in with Google and your projects save to your account.
Yours, and out the door. Export 24-bit/48 kHz WAV, 320 kbps MP3 or MIDI, the full mix or every track, as often as you like, with no watermark. Veena's terms say "you own the Output you generate through your use of the Service." Need the notes elsewhere? Veena doubles as a MIDI generator.
Other ACE-Step alternatives, and what each costs you

MiniMax Music 3: CUDA and a loose brief. Its model card says "Inference requires CUDA", its quick-start code "fits 24GB+ VRAM GPUs", and "The generated tempo, key, instrumentation, lyrics, and song structure may not always match every requested detail exactly" (Hugging Face, September 2026). MiniMax closed its paid music API to new users on 20 August 2026.
Stable Audio: no free plan, stems still "experimental". Stability AI's web app starts at $12 a month with no free plan on its pricing page, its stem export is labelled "Generate and export stems (experimental)", and its best model, Stable Audio 3.0 Large, is "available via the Stability AI API and self-hosting for enterprise deployments" (Stable Audio's pricing page, September 2026, and Stability AI's announcement of 20 May 2026). Suno: no install, but a counted download. Pro ($10 a month) downloads 20 songs a month and Premier ($30) 60 since 3 September 2026, free-plan songs belong to Suno, and its studio is Premier-only and "not compatible with VST or Audio Units plugins" (Suno's help centre, September 2026).
