Music production without a graphics card is the normal case: audio runs on your processor, and DAWs list CPU, RAM and disk, not a GPU. Only local AI needs one. No row asks for a graphics card. A laptop with integrated graphics, a MacBook with an Intel chip or a Chromebook runs the same studio and gets the same CoProducer as a desktop with a gaming GPU.
Where the graphics card question comes from
Local AI models. Open-source music generators run on your own hardware, and their pages say what that means. YuE2 needs "Linux · Python 3.12 · NVIDIA GPU with BF16 support and 24 GB VRAM" (YuE project page, September 2026). ACE-Step 1.5 recommends a CUDA GPU, and its XL model "Requires ≥12GB VRAM (with offload), ≥20GB recommended"; its own authors list "gacha-style" results, meaning outputs that vary unpredictably from run to run, among its limits (ACE-Step project pages, September 2026).
AI inside installed DAWs. On-device AI features come with chip requirements. Apple's App Store listing says Logic Pro's Stem Splitter and ChromaGlow require an "Apple M1 chip or later", and Apple notes "Some features of Apple Creator Studio require an Apple Intelligence–capable device" (Apple, September 2026).
The DAW itself doesn't need one. FL Studio lists "4 GB of RAM" and Ableton Live 12 lists "8 GB RAM" and an AVX2 processor on Windows (Image-Line and Ableton, September 2026). The graphics card isn't on the list; the processor is. Our explainer on CPU vs GPU for audio covers why.

How to make music on a laptop without a graphics card

If a busy session crackles, the fix is the audio buffer, not a GPU: open Studio Settings, then Audio Settings, and raise Audio Buffer Size from 512 to 1024 samples.
