You don't need to own a guitar or a keyboard to have musical ideas. Most songs start as a tune in someone's head. The hard part used to be getting it out without an instrument to play it on. Here is how to make music without instruments, using six you already own.

1. Your words

Describe the song the way you would to a producer friend, and CoProducer builds it. Genre, tempo, key, the instruments you hear, the feel, the sections. The lo-fi brief at the bottom of this page is a good first one. CoProducer offers three options for each new part, so you steer by picking what sounds right, then by asking: "busier hats", "darker chords", "drop the bass out for the last four bars".

2. Your voice

Hum or sing a melody into your laptop's mic. Then choose what it becomes:

3. Your mouth, as a drum machine

Beatbox the groove: "boots" for the kick, "cats" for the snare, "ts" for the hats. Ask CoProducer to turn it into drums, and your pattern becomes a real kit on its own track. Swap the kit, tighten the timing or ask for a fill like any other drum part.

4. Your computer keyboard

Veena turns your laptop keys into a piano. The row from A to the apostrophe plays the white notes, the row from W to the right bracket plays the black notes, and Z and X shift the octave. Choose an instrument, pick a sound and press record, with a count-in and the metronome if you want them. Then fix any wrong note in the piano roll.

5. Your mouse

Draw notes straight into the piano roll, with eight snap settings from a whole bar down to fine subdivisions. For drums, the Beat Maker step sequencer lets you click a pattern onto a grid, and the 16-pad sampler plays any sound you load onto it.

6. A library of sounds

What you still bring

No instrument doesn't mean no musicianship. The taste is yours: which of the three options feels right, where the song should breathe, what the chorus needs. In Veena's own data, only about 3% of typed requests name an artist. The rest describe tempo, key, bars and instruments, in the listener's own words.
