What is reverb?

Published By Veena Studio

Reverb is the sound of a space: the thousands of reflections off walls, floor and ceiling that keep a sound ringing after its source stops, fading as a smooth tail. In Veena, the free AI DAW in your browser, Reverb sits on every track's FX rack, and CoProducer knows what "a short room on the snare" or "a big hall on the vocal" means.

What is reverb made of?

Every reverb, real or digital, has three parts:

PartWhat you hearThe control that shapes it
Direct soundThe source itself, before any reflectionThe dry level
Early reflectionsThe first echoes off nearby surfaces, which tell your ear the room's sizePre-Delay, the gap before they start
TailReflections blurred into a wash that fades awayDecay, how long it rings; Tone, how bright it is

Mix sets how much of all that you hear against the dry sound.

Types of reverb

  • Room: short and natural, for drums and anything that should stay close.
  • Hall: long and smooth, for pads, strings and ballad vocals.
  • Plate: bright and dense, the classic vocal and snare sound, first made with a vibrating steel sheet.
  • Spring: twangy and splashy, built into guitar amps.
  • Chamber: a real echo room, warm and characterful.

Reverb on a vocal in three moves

  1. Start with a Plate or Hall at a low Mix, so you hear the space only when the vocal stops.
  2. Add 20 to 60 ms of Pre-Delay to keep the words clear before the tail arrives.
  3. Set Decay to the tempo: the tail should fade before the next line starts.

Reverb in Veena

Open a track's FX rack, add Reverb from Stock FX, start from a preset and turn Decay, Pre-Delay, Tone and Mix. Place it after EQ and compression in the chain to keep its tail intact. For several parts in one space, ask CoProducer for a shared room: each track gets its own Wet amount into the same reverb. Or describe the result, "make the chorus vocal bigger" or "less reverb on the drums", and CoProducer sets it. The reverb you hear is the reverb you export.

Frequently asked questions

Does Veena have a reverb effect?

Yes: add Reverb from Stock FX on any track's FX rack and shape it with Decay, Pre-Delay, Tone and Mix, starting from presets such as Room, Hall and Plate. Veena is an AI DAW with a personal music producer built in. Describe the song you want and CoProducer builds it with you — beats, chords, melody, arrangement and mix — as real tracks you can edit, mix and export. Free, in your browser.

What does reverb do to vocals?

Reverb puts a vocal in a space, so it sounds like a singer in a room rather than a voice in your ear. A short room adds life without pushing it back; a longer hall or plate makes it bigger and further away. In Veena, ask CoProducer for 'a Plate reverb on the vocal, keep it upfront' and set the Mix to taste.

What is the difference between reverb and delay?

Delay repeats a sound as distinct echoes you can count, often in time with the beat. Reverb is thousands of reflections blurred into one smooth tail, the sound of a space. Both live in Veena's FX rack: Reverb for the room, Delay for tempo-synced or ping-pong repeats, and CoProducer sets either from a plain request.

What does reverb mean in music?

In music, reverb is the space around a sound: the reflections that keep it ringing after the note stops, whether from a real room or an effect that imitates one. Producers use it to make parts sound near or far and to glue a mix together. Veena's free Reverb effect lets you shape that space on every track in your browser.
