What is Auto-Tune?
Auto-Tune (often written autotune) is pitch correction: it detects the pitch a singer hits and pulls each note to the nearest note in a chosen key. What is Auto-Tune listening for?
Pitch correction works in three steps. First it tracks the pitch of the voice, moment to moment. Then it picks a target: the nearest note that belongs to the key and scale you set. In A minor, a sung G sharp is pulled to G or A, because G sharp isn't in the scale. Finally it shifts the voice toward that target, and the speed of the shift is the whole character of the effect.
Natural or hard
- Natural style moves notes gradually and keeps slides, vibrato and breath intact. Listeners hear a confident singer, not an effect.
- Hard style snaps each note instantly, so the pitch jumps in steps between notes: the signature sound of trap, hyperpop and a lot of modern pop.
Mistakes that make tuning obvious
- The wrong key or scale, which drags good notes to wrong ones.
- Hard style on a ballad, when you wanted invisible correction.
- Tuning a take with timing problems and hoping it will sound fixed.
- Full correction on long, expressive notes, where a little drift sounds human.
