Studio One Alternative: What to Use After the Fender Rename

Studio One is now Fender Studio Pro 8, a $199.99 licence whose new features stop arriving after a year unless you pay again, or $19.99 a month, and the free Studio One Prime is a legacy product, so any Studio One alternative has to beat a new deal. What happened to Studio One?

In January 2026 PreSonus's DAW changed its name: "Studio One will now be known as Fender Studio Pro", starting with version 8 (Sound On Sound, 20 January 2026). The old presonus.com Studio One pages now redirect to fender.com. Fender describes it as "Built on PreSonus' award-winning Studio One platform", version 8.1 added a "Moises Studio Integration", and Fender also lists a "Studio Assistant" (Fender's Studio Pro page, September 2026).

The free edition didn't make the trip. Fender's upgrade terms mention "demo or free versions (e.g., Studio One Prime)", and Fender's free product is now a different app: Fender Studio, which on Apple's App Store is "Free" and records "in up to 8 tracks", or "up to 16 tracks" after a free registration, with export "as MP3" (Apple's App Store listing, September 2026).

What Fender Studio Pro 8 costs

Fender sells four ways in (Fender's Studio Pro page, September 2026):

• Perpetual License, $199.99: "One-time payment for a perpetual license to the current version of Fender Studio Pro. One (1) year of new feature releases included, all yours to keep."
• Upgrade License, $99.99: for owners of Studio One Pro 7 or a Fender Studio Pro perpetual licence, with "12 months of free feature updates".
• Perpetual License with Pro+ Annual Plan, $179.99 a year.
• Pro+ Monthly Plan, $19.99 a month: "Monthly access to Fender Studio Pro and Pro+ extras".

The licence is yours to keep. The new features aren't: after 12 months you pay again, or you stay on the version you bought. And it is a desktop install for Windows and macOS only; there is no Linux, Chromebook or browser version.

What it costs you: $199.99 up front, $99.99 or more each time you want the next year of features, and a computer it installs on.

Veena: the Studio One alternative for songwriters

Studio One earned its fans with a fast songwriting workflow. Veena takes that further: you describe the song and a producer writes it with you. Open daw.veena.studio on Windows, Mac, Linux or a Chromebook, sign in with Google, and type:

Your voice at the centre. Record your vocal with a count-in and a live waveform, then ask CoProducer to build around it: it measures the take's tempo and "flow map", where the syllables land, and every new part reads it. Tune it with Veena's Auto-Tune effect, set by key, scale, amount and style.

Co-writing in real time. Click Share, send an invite link, and your co-writer joins the same session with a live, named cursor. Each of you gets a private CoProducer chat plus a shared one, and when someone picks a part in the shared chat, Veena shows "Selected by" their name.

Your plug-ins and sounds. The Veena Bridge helper hosts your VST3 plug-ins on Windows and VST3 and Audio Unit plug-ins on a Mac (how Veena Bridge works). Built in: 61 instrument presets, 7 drum kits, a 16-pad sampler, 10 effects and 27,356 curated samples plus a licensed professional catalogue.

Logic Pro: only on Apple silicon

Moving your Studio One songs to Veena

1. Export from Studio One or Fender Studio Pro. Export every track as a WAV stem from the start of the song, so they line up, and your instrument parts as MIDI.
2. Open Veena in your browser and drag the files onto the timeline. Veena reads 13 audio formats plus MIDI; each MIDI track gets its own track and instrument, and the first clip sets the project tempo.
3. Split old mixdowns. Only kept a stereo bounce? Right-click it and choose Separate into Stems, or use the free stem splitter.

5. Bring your co-writer in with a Share link, and finish it together.

Studio One became Fender Studio Pro, and the deal changed with the name: $199.99 buys a year of new features, $19.99 a month rents the rest, and the free Prime is gone.
