Three backing tracks, three prompts

For guitarists: a 12-bar blues in A. The form is the one every player knows, written out so CoProducer and you are on the same page:

Make a 12-bar blues backing track in A at 96 BPM with a shuffle feel: brushed shuffle drums, a walking upright bass, piano comping on A7, D7 and E7, and a turnaround in the last two bars. No lead guitar, I'll play it. Loop it four times.

Guitar and piano are among the instruments people name most in their first request to Veena, alongside vocals, drums, bass and synth. The backing track is where those players start.

How to make an AI backing track in Veena

1. Open Veena in your browser and sign in with Google. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and Chromebook laptops.
2. Paste one of the prompts above, or write your own with the style, key, BPM and the instruments you want in the band.
3. Let CoProducer build the band. It offers three options for each new part, and a part that has to fit another reads that part's actual notes, so the bass walks through the same changes the piano is comping.
4. Shape it. "Double the length of the solo section." "Make the drums sparser in the verses." "Swap the piano for an electric piano." Or open any part in the piano roll and fix a voicing yourself.
5. Play or record over it. Record your guitar or vocal from your mic straight onto a new track in the browser.
6. Take it with you. Export the whole backing track or every instrument separately, as WAV, MP3 or MIDI, as often as you like.

Build the band around your own playing

The best backing track fits the song you are already playing. Drop your chord demo, a guitar loop or a voice memo onto the timeline and ask CoProducer to "add drums, bass and keys under this". In Veena's own data, about 1 in 4 first requests refer to the person's own audio: a recording, a demo, a loop or a voice memo.
