What's the difference between 3/4 and 6/8?

Both hold six eighth notes per bar, but 3/4 groups them as three beats of two, ONE-and-TWO-and-THREE-and, while 6/8 groups them as two beats of three, ONE-two-three-TWO-two-three. In Veena, pick either from the time signature menu and CoProducer writes every part in that meter.

What time signature is most music in?

A time signature shows how beats group into bars: the top number is beats per bar, the bottom number is the note value that gets one beat. Veena offers 8 of them, free in your browser: tell CoProducer what feel you want, whether a waltz or a 7/8 groove, and it writes the parts in that meter.

What is a time signature telling you?

In 4/4, the top 4 means four beats per bar and the bottom 4 means each beat is a quarter note. In 6/8, six eighth notes fill each bar. The time signature doesn't set speed, which is the job of BPM; it sets how the pulse is counted and where the strong beats fall.

Simple and compound meter

Meters whose beats split in two, such as 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4, are simple. Meters whose beats split in three, such as 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8, are compound, and they lilt by nature: 12/8 is the rolling feel of a slow blues.
