Swing decides where the offbeat sits; quantisation decides how strictly everything obeys the grid. The two numbers that matter: 50 percent swing is straight, 66 percent is a full triplet shuffle, and almost every good groove lives between 52 and 62 percent. Anything above 66 starts to sound like a stylistic statement rather than a feel.
Take two adjacent sixteenth notes. The first sits on the beat. Swing determines where the second one lands in the space before the next onbeat note.
- 50 percent — exactly halfway. Straight, mechanical, correct for techno and most house.
- 54–58 percent — a slight delay. You feel it before you hear it. This is the range most modern productions live in.
- 58–62 percent — an obvious bounce. Boom bap, neo-soul, UK garage.
- 66–67 percent — the offbeat lands on the third triplet. A full shuffle: jazz, blues shuffle, some house records that lean deliberately into it.
Critically, choose the resolution before the amount. Swing applied to eighth notes moves different notes than swing applied to sixteenths. Most hip-hop and garage swing is sixteenth-note swing. Jazz and shuffle feels are eighth-note swing.

Jazz swing is not a fixed ratio. Players swing harder at slow tempos and approach straight eighths at very fast ones, which is why a fixed 66 percent setting on a fast jazz pattern sounds wrong.
Applying one swing value to every element flattens the groove. In practice:
- Hi-hats take most of the swing. This is where the bounce lives.
- Kick usually stays close to straight, because it is the anchor.
- Snare takes a small amount, or a manual nudge instead.
- Bass should agree with the kick, not with the hats.
Swinging everything by the same percentage just produces a slightly late version of a straight beat.
Strength or amount. Rather than snapping a note to the grid, move it a percentage of the way. 50 percent strength halves every timing error, tightening a sloppy performance while keeping its character. This is almost always better than 100 percent on played parts.
Iterative quantisation. Apply 50 percent strength repeatedly. Each pass tightens further, and you stop when it feels right rather than when it is mathematically perfect.
Quantise range or window. Only correct notes that are within a set distance of a grid line. Notes far from the grid, which may be deliberate, stay untouched.
Groove templates. Extract the timing and velocity pattern from a reference — a classic sampler groove, a live drum take, a loop you like — and apply it to your programmed parts. This transfers a whole feel, including the velocity relationships, which a swing percentage cannot do.
Perfectly timed hits at identical velocity still sound like a machine. Real drummers accent unevenly:
- Vary hi-hat velocities across a bar, typically with the onbeats louder than the offbeats.
- Use ghost notes on the snare at low velocity between the main hits.
- Make sure your sample library actually responds to velocity — a one-shot triggered at the same sample regardless of velocity will only change level, not tone.
Live drums. The timing relationships between the kick, snare and hats are the drummer. Quantising them individually destroys the relationships and creates phase problems between the mics.
Guitar and piano performances. A strum is a spread of notes over 20–40 ms. Quantisation collapses it into a block chord.
Vocals. Correct obvious errors by hand. Never grid-align a vocal.
Anything where the point is feel. If you sampled a break because of how it moved, do not remove how it moved.
Quantise to fix mistakes, not to impose correctness. If a part sounds wrong, first check whether it is actually early or late relative to the kick, not relative to the grid. Grooves are made of relationships, and the grid is only one participant.
