How to Write Basslines That Work

The bass connects harmony and rhythm. How to write lines that lock with the kick, outline the chords, and leave room for everything else.

The bass does two jobs at once: it defines the harmony from below and it locks the rhythm. Most bassline problems come from doing one and forgetting the other.

Start with roots and rhythm

The simplest bassline that works: the root note of each chord, played on the strong beats, with a rhythm that locks to the kick.

That's genuinely enough for a huge amount of music. Before adding anything, make sure this version grooves. If the simple version doesn't feel good, adding notes won't fix it.

Locking with the kick

The relationship between bass and kick is the foundation of the low end.

Notes on kick hits = weight and impact. The two reinforce each other. Notes between kick hits = groove and movement. The bass fills the space the kick leaves.

Most good basslines do both: land on the main kicks, then move in the gaps.

What doesn't work is mirroring every kick exactly — the low end becomes a single dense block with no rhythm.

Adding movement

Once the roots and rhythm work, add motion between chords:

Passing notes — walk from one root to the next through the scale. From C to F: C–D–E–F.

Chromatic approach — land on the target note from a semitone below. Approaching F from E natural adds tension and pull.

Chord tones — the third and fifth of the chord, not just the root. Playing the fifth under a chord creates a lighter, less rooted feel.

Octave jumps — a classic disco and house device that adds energy without adding notes.

Register

Bass lives roughly E1 to G2. Above that it stops functioning as bass and starts competing with other instruments.

Keep it in a narrow range. Basslines that leap two octaves lose their foundational role.

Making it audible everywhere

The critical practical point: most people listen on phones and laptops that cannot reproduce below ~100Hz.

A pure sine sub-bass is inaudible on those devices. The fix is saturation — adding harmonic distortion creates content at 200Hz, 400Hz, and above. Your brain reconstructs the missing fundamental from those harmonics, so listeners perceive the bass note even though the speaker never produces it.

Check every mix on a phone speaker. If the bass disappears, add saturation.

Genre notes

  • Hip-hop / trap: sparse, tuned 808s with glides
  • House: steady 8ths or offbeat stabs, sidechained to the kick
  • Funk / disco: busy, syncopated, the main groove element
  • Rock: roots and fifths, locked to the kick
  • DnB: long sustained sub notes with movement in a separate mid-bass layer
