House is built on the most recognisable pattern in dance music. The craft is in what you do around it.
Over one bar at 124 BPM:
- Kick: every beat — 1, 2, 3, 4. Four to the floor.
- Open hi-hat: the offbeats — the "and" of every beat.
- Clap or snare: beats 2 and 4.
- Closed hats: sixteenths, or eighths for a sparser feel.
That offbeat open hat is the defining element. It creates the lifting, swinging pull that makes house feel like house.
House kicks are short, punchy, and tuned. Key points:
- Tune it to the track's key. A kick has a pitch. If it clashes with the bass, the low end sounds wrong and no amount of EQ fixes it.
- Keep it short. Long kicks muddy the low end at 124 BPM — they overlap.
- Layer if needed: a sub layer for weight plus a click layer for attack.
Programming detail that matters: the open hat should be choked by the next closed hat. On a real drum kit, closing the pedal cuts the open sound. Emulate this by shortening the open hat so it stops just as the next closed hat hits — otherwise the hats wash together.
This separates deep house from generic four-to-the-floor.
Apply shuffle or swing of 8–20% to the hi-hats only, leaving the kick straight. The kick stays metronomic while the hats pull against it, creating the loose, rolling feel of classic house.
Too much shuffle and it becomes garage. That's a different genre — but a useful one to know is only a few percent away.
House lives on percussion:
- Shakers on sixteenths, low in the mix, with velocity variation
- Rimshots and congas for movement
- A ride in the second half to lift energy
- Reversed crashes into section changes
Keep them quiet. Percussion in house works subliminally — you feel it more than hear it.
Vary hat velocities. Accent the offbeat open hats; keep closed hats varied between 60 and 90.
Sidechain the bass to the kick. This is not optional in house. It's what lets the kick punch through and creates the pumping motion.
Don't quantise the percussion hard. Leave the shakers and congas slightly loose.
Filter the hats. Rolling off the low end of hi-hats around 300Hz cleans up an enormous amount of mud.
