  3. Add air, not detail. Field recordings at low level: rain, wind, distant room tone. Keep them below the music, filtered.
  4. Automate slowly. Filter cutoff, reverb send, and layer volumes moving over minutes, not bars. If an automation curve is visible as a shape on the screen, it is probably too fast.
  5. Use long reverb with pre-delay. Decay times of several seconds place everything in one shared space and smear remaining transients.
  6. Extend, then check the joins. If you loop material, crossfade across many seconds so no seam is audible. A loop point that clicks will wake somebody up.
  7. Check the master in the dark, quietly, in bed. That is the listening environment. Anything that stands out there gets removed.
