MIDI 1.0 shipped in 1983 and barely changed for four decades — a remarkable run for any standard. MIDI 2.0 addresses its real limitations without breaking anything.
7-bit resolution. Most MIDI values are 0–127. For velocity, that means 128 possible strengths of a note. On a piano part with subtle dynamics, players can hear the steps — it is the origin of the "stair-stepping" quality in some MIDI performances.
One-way communication. A controller sends; it never knows if anything received. No device could tell another what it was capable of.
Channel-wide control. Pitch bend applied to the whole channel, so you couldn't bend one note in a chord. MPE was invented as a clever workaround, using a channel per note.
Manual configuration. Every device needed setting up by hand.
32-bit resolution. Velocity and controllers get billions of steps instead of 128. Stair-stepping disappears entirely.
Per-note controllers. Pitch, timbre, and expression can now be addressed per note natively, rather than through the MPE channel workaround. Bend one note of a chord while holding the others.
Bidirectional communication. Devices negotiate. A controller can ask a synth what parameters it exposes and configure itself accordingly.
Profiles and Property Exchange. Devices describe their capabilities, so a controller can auto-map to a plugin's actual parameters rather than needing manual assignment.
Backward compatibility. MIDI 2.0 devices detect MIDI 1.0 devices and fall back. Nothing you own stops working.
Yes, if: you play expressive controllers (MPE keyboards, wind controllers, ROLI-style surfaces), you write orchestral or piano music where dynamic subtlety matters, or you're tired of manually mapping controllers.
Not really, if: you program drums and electronic parts in a piano roll, where 128 velocity steps have never been the limitation.
Adoption is steady rather than dramatic. Operating systems support it, major DAWs support it, and new hardware increasingly ships with it. But most MIDI in the world is still 1.0, and it works.
The honest advice: don't replace working gear for MIDI 2.0. Do prefer it when buying new expressive controllers, where the resolution genuinely changes how the instrument feels.
