LUFS and Loudness Explained: Why Louder Masters Stopped Working

How streaming normalisation ended the loudness war, what LUFS actually measures, and the targets that matter for Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.

Streaming normalisation ended the loudness war, and a lot of mastering advice hasn't caught up.

What LUFS measures

LUFS — Loudness Units Full Scale — measures perceived loudness. It applies a frequency weighting that approximates human hearing, which is more sensitive to midrange than to deep bass or extreme treble.

This is why it replaced peak metering. Peak meters show the highest sample value, which tells you almost nothing about how loud something sounds. A bass-heavy track and a bright track can peak identically and differ enormously in perceived loudness.

Three measurements matter:

  • Integrated LUFS — average loudness over the whole track. This is the one platforms use.
  • Short-term LUFS — over three seconds. Useful for checking section-to-section consistency.
  • True Peak — the actual analogue peak after digital-to-analogue conversion, which can exceed the digital peak.

If your master is louder than the target, the platform turns it down. Your -8 LUFS master plays at the same level as everyone else's — except yours has been squashed to get there and theirs hasn't.

Why this changed everything

Before normalisation, louder genuinely meant more impactful on a playlist. Mastering engineers compressed and limited aggressively because the alternative was sounding weak next to competitors.

That incentive is gone. Now, over-limiting is a pure loss: you sacrifice transients, punch, and depth, and then the platform removes the loudness advantage you paid for.

The practical targets

  • Integrated: -14 LUFS for streaming. Some genres sit louder by convention; -14 is the safe default.
  • True Peak: -1.0 dBTP. This matters — lossy encoding can push peaks above the digital maximum, causing distortion on playback. Leaving a dB of headroom prevents it.
  • Dynamic range: don't chase a number. If the track breathes and the transients survive, it's fine.

The exceptions

Club and DJ use. Tracks played from files at a venue aren't normalised. Louder masters for club releases still have a rationale.

Genre convention. Aggressive electronic and metal often sit around -9 to -11 LUFS because the density is part of the sound. That's a stylistic choice, not a loudness competition.

Video and broadcast. Broadcast standards target -23 LUFS (EBU R128) or -24 LUFS (ATSC A/85). Deliver to spec.

How to check

Any loudness meter will do — most DAWs include one, and free options like Youlean Loudness Meter are excellent. Measure the integrated value across the whole track, not a loud section.
